Q&A: Transportation

What is an OV-chip card?
In the Netherlands you can make use of public transport by using the OV-chip card. This applies for travelling by train, bus, metro and tram. You can reload your card here or at machines at train stations. Every time you use public transport, you will have to check in and check out with your OV-chip card.

How do I get an OV-chip card?
You can buy your OV-chip card here, at the Central Station or in the machines at the different train stations.

What are the advantages of having one?
If you don’t have an OV-chip card, you will have to buy a ticket every time you will make use of public transportation. This will take a lot of time and soon you will discover that it is really convenient and cheaper to have one.

How do I get student discount on my OV- chip card?
You will be able to get a student discount if you have been living in the Netherlands for 5 consecutive years or more. Moreover, if you (or your non-Dutch parent or partner) work in the Netherlands for at least 56 hours a month you will be able to obtain the same benefits. For this matter the same rules apply as in the case of student finance. What is the easiest way to get around the city?
Definitely by bike. Did you know that there are 19 million bicycles in The Netherlands? On average, that’s 1.1 bike per person! We would highly recommend you to join the club and to buy a bike. Although… Dutch weather can be disappointing at times. This will mean that you will sometimes make use of public transportation. This is no problem at all because there is a great system of public transportation in Amsterdam. It’s really easy to travel through the city by metro or tram. You can always look up the schedule at www.9292.nl, or download their app. Keep in mind that there is limited public transportation at night so once again: make sure to buy a bike!
